Dialshelf · Moving from Speed Dial 2

Move from Speed Dial 2

Speed Dial 2 can save everything to one file. Dialshelf reads that file and rebuilds your groups and dials, with sharp logos. It takes about a minute, and nothing in Speed Dial 2 changes.

Free. Also works in Brave and Edge from the Chrome Web Store.

1. Export from Speed Dial 2

  1. Open Speed Dial 2’s Preferences.
  2. Go to the System section and click Export.
  3. Your browser saves a .json file, usually in Downloads.

If your version looks different, look in its settings for the Import/Export or backup section.

2. Import into Dialshelf

  1. Install Dialshelf and open a new tab.
  2. If your shelf is empty, click Import a file. If you already have dials, open Settings › Sync & data and click Import a file.
  3. Pick the .json file you exported.
  4. Choose which groups to bring over, then click Import.

Want your browser bookmarks too? Click Import my bookmarks on the empty shelf, or Import bookmarks in Settings › Sync & data. Each bookmark folder becomes a group.

What comes over

  • Your groups, with their names, in the same order.
  • Every dial in each group, with its address and title, in the same order.
  • Visit counts, when the file has them.
  • Pictures you uploaded to Speed Dial 2 yourself. They stay where Speed Dial 2 stored them (uploads.speeddial2.com), so a tile shows its picture for as long as that address works. You can paste or drop a copy into the tile editor any time.
  • Your layout, if you want it: columns, spacing, corner shape, open in a new tab, whether titles show, square tiles, and a light, dark or automatic theme. The import window has a box for this, ticked to start with. Untick it to keep Dialshelf’s own layout.

If you already have a group with the same name, the dials go into it, and addresses already in that group are skipped. Backgrounds don’t come over, and neither do the thumbnails Speed Dial 2 made for you: Dialshelf shows real logos instead.

After the import

170 popular sites have sharp logos built into Dialshelf, so those tiles look right straight away. For the other sites, Dialshelf offers to look up each site’s own logo. It tells you what it will contact and asks first. Choose Not now and those tiles use the browser’s small icon.

Sync between computers

Everything on this page is free. Sync between computers is $10 a year, or $29 once for a lifetime key, and you can try it free for 7 days. Sign in with Google on each computer and your shelf and your key come along.

Questions

Will my Speed Dial 2 data be deleted?

No. Exporting only reads your dials and saves a copy as a file. Speed Dial 2 keeps working until you remove it yourself.

Does it work in Brave and Edge?

Yes. Both install Dialshelf from the Chrome Web Store. In Edge, allow extensions from other stores when it asks.

Is anything sent to XT3?

Not your dials. Your file is read inside your browser and is never uploaded, and Dialshelf has no analytics. XT3 only ever gets an error report if you turn error reports on, and the version number when you remove the extension. The privacy policy has the details.
